I love going to the zoo. But I never realised how much zoos were harmful to the animals and also to us until this year. Animals are taken away from their homes to be kept in small enclosures. But on the flip side, if we didn’t have zoos then to see the wild animals we would have to travel to their natural habitat and see them and we wouldn’t be able to see wild animals at a place nearby. It wasn’t until last year that I was pulled into the topic. I found out more information on the pros and cons of having zoos.
In class we discussed around the question “are zoo’s good or bad?”. Everyone expressed their own opinions. When we first started getting into the topic I chose good because of all the pros.
One of the pros of having zoos is that in zoos it is impossible for the animal to be caught by its prey or to be malnourished because in the zoos each animal or its herd has an enclosure so in that enclosure no other animal can get in ,also animals have to be well fed by zoo staff otherwise they will die and the zoo company will go down. Another one of the pros of having zoos is that we have access to see the wild animals nearby and we wouldn’t have to travel far to see them.
At the end of the process when the class had been asked the same question again, “are zoos good or bad?” I said bad. I chose bad because I put myself in the animals shoes and I realised how it would feel if you were taken away from your family to live in a small enclosure and not be able to talk to anyone. In their natural habitats they have no boundaries and can walk long distances but in zoos, they have small enclosures so they don’t have the ability to walk around as much as they could in their natural habitat.
