Is Canada an inclusive society?

Justin Trudeau on Chinese New Year

I think Canada is an inclusive society because we welcome refugees into our country and I have also seen many news articles talking about canadians standing up for different people with different cultures and religions. I think that has a big impact on other people because there are still people in the world that are racist or don’t like other religions but we can’t change them but we can change ourselves, and i think reading article like that can really put you in their shoes and make you change perspectives and you can actually understand how much they suffered. I also think we are an inclusive society in canada because we have so many different festivals to represent other cultures such as festival of India, little Italy, Chinese New Year etc.

What is being an inclusive society?

Being an inclusive society is being very open to different religions and also respecting different cultures. In my opinion I think being an inclusive society involves the  government and the citizens coming together to appreciate other people and to come together as one country even if we have different skin colors or different cultures. Being an inclusive society can help our country because we open up to new cultures and traditions.

In the Past

In the past there have been many incidents that made canada not an inclusive society. For example the Komagata Maru incident which was in 1914, let down more than 300 indians seeking a better future in canada.  The indians travelled many kilometres reaching canada to find a better living in canada but they reached there just to find out that the government wouldn’t let them into canada.  102 years later justin trudeau apologized to the indians.  In the past there was also the incident with the aboriginals. Many aboriginals suffered to come into canada. They were forced to change their langues, culture and their looks and send their children to a school where they could never see their family every again.

How we have changed

Alain Charette (bus driver) and Hailey DeJong

Now we are a very inclusive society. JUstin trudeau later apologized for the komagata maru incident and for the aboriginal rights. We have so many more different festivals of different cultures in canada. Also recently I found a news article that was talking about a woman named Hailey that was on an oc transpo bus. Hailey was a muslim and she wore a head covering. When she sat down on the bus there was another man on the bus screaming “get off the bus” and “ewwww!” right atg Hailey. Others on the bus helped Hailey and tried to force the man off the bus but he just kept responding “why should I go, just look at her”. “He was also making comments like, ”Oh, she could be a bank robber and we don’t even know,”.OC Transpo bus driver Alain Charette parked the bus and came to her defence, saying he had called authorities.”At one point the driver shouted from the front of the bus, ”Hey, if you have a problem with her, then you have a problem with me.” So that got the man’s attention and he started to get out of his seat”. I think that story can impact many others to stand up for other people.

In conclusion I think canada has changed a lot and we are becoming a more inclusive society just by little actions. I also think we will continue to change and respect more cultures.
