Tobermory Trip

Day 1 Monday- Roadtrip!

The exotic vacation started with a long 4-hour drive to Toronto. At Toronto, we stopped at one of my dad’s old classmates house. After saying hi and eating some food we continued our journey to Walkerton, Ontario. After almost 3 hours later we arrived at our hotel. We stayed at Best Western which is actually an hour and a half away from Tobermory but its the only hotel we could find available due to the long weekend. After the exhausting but scenic car ride we all slept for some time and then my sister and I eagerly got ready to go swimming at the indoor pool. The pool was an unpleasant green color and pretty shallow but other than that Lisa and I had a lot of fun! After dinner, we headed straight to bed for a good nights sleep because the next day we had to wake up early to go to Flowerpot Island.

Day 2 Tuesday – Flowerpot Island

Because our hotel was not in Tobermory we had to drive for about an hour and a half to get to the place where we would board the glass-bottom boat to go to the flowerpot island. To our surprise, the “glass-bottom” part of the boat was only 3 small rectangles in the center of the boat. Halfway through the boat trip, we got to see large shipwrecks. They were amazing! Through the crystal clear teal water, the intricate details of the ship were visible. After seeing two shipwrecks and learning many facts along the way we continued the journey to the island. As we got closer and closer to the island I had to pinch myself harder and harder. I was in complete shock. I had never seen a place like this anywhere and I would’ve never thought it would be in Ontario. The water was bright teal and the island was so scenic. It was like something you would see in the Caribbean definitely not in Ontario. As I stepped foot onto the island everything sunk in and I was amazed at how an island could be this pretty. As we were waiting for others to get off the boat I took a look at the map and immediately wanted to explore the whole island! We decided to follow a tour guide to explore and learn more about the island. Along the way to the beach we visited the small flower pot and the large flowerpot which were shockingly big, we also learned more about the types of rocks and orchids found on the island. We also found out the secret to how the flowerpots were able to keep standing through all these years. The tour guide told us that originally there were three flower pots but one fell down because of the amount of water that entered inside the flowerpot and broke apart the rocks that made it up. Because of that local people decided to put cement on top of the flowerpots to prevent more water from coming in. During the hike, we also saw a snakes skin that was just off the trail. After seeing both of the flowerpots we went to the beach. It wasn’t one of those normal beaches though. Instead of sand, the beach was covered in giant rock. In the water, it was super slippery because of all the algae. Aside from that the view, the water, the experience was all breathtaking. We stayed at the island until 3 getting sunburned but getting lots of amazing pictures! That evening we ate dinner at a Chinese restaurant and went to bed.

Day 3 Wednesday-Sauble Beach and the Grotto

That morning we left after breakfast to Sauble beach which is halfway in between our hotel and the flowerpot island. It was a very windy day with not much sun peeking through the clouds. Immediately I wanted to go into the stores. I really wanted a sweater that said Sauble beach and I had found the perfect dark bly and grey oversized lace-up sweater that read Sauble beach on the back. It was a bit on the expensive side but I love it. Thank you, Mamma and Daddy, for buying it for me! After buying my sweater Lisa and I decided to go swimming in the water. It definitely wasn’t like a swim yesterday though. The water was absolutely freezing. Through the unbearably cold water, I still went deeper into the water. But at one point I was shivering so bad and so I had to come back and wrap myself in a towel. After drying off my mom and I decided to get some food for all of us because we were starving. After finishing our food Lisa begged to go back in the water. I refused until my parents convinced me to do it. We all know that by convinced I really mean forced. 🙂 I went into the water up to my waist but I couldn’t take the freezing water anymore and I bailed for real this time and I did not go back in after that. We decided that the beach was a waste considering there was nothing else to do there. At 5:30 we had to go to the Grotto and the Indian Head Cove so we had a lot of time to kill considering it was only 12 at the time. I’m really sorry but I completely forget everything that happened until 5:30. I’m pretty sure I was sleeping or I have really bad memory. I woke up in a parking lot. We had to walk for about 25 minutes through a very scenic and narrow path to reach the Grotto, a so-called cave. To our surprise this cave was not a long narrow dark cave which you can walk through, it was a tiny open cave with lots and lots of water in it. Attached to the Grotto was the Indian Head Cove which was an open rock beach. The water was freezing but I still decided to go because of the beautiful water. The waves were super high so couldn’t go far. We stayed there until about 6 and then we started walking back to the parking lot. After getting into our car we went for dinner at the same Chinese restaurant as yesterday. After eating dinner we went back to the hotel. Of course, we didn’t go swimming enough so we went swimming again in the indoor pool. After swimming and taking a good shower we went to bed.

Day 4 Thursday- Goodbye Tobermory!

That morning we ate breakfast at the hotel and headed straight back home. Overall the trip was beyond amazing. This family trip is one that I will remember forever and certainly one of my highlights from this summer. I learned so much and I had so much fun. I can’t wait to go on another adventure like this.
