Chris, the main character was invited by his “Daredevil” uncle Jack to go on a sailing trip down the Alaskan coastline. During the voyage, the boat sinks and with it goes Uncle Jack. The only two survivors are Chris and Frank, who immediately hates Chris. Both boys are left to survive in a rugged world, facing grizzly bears, wolves, and their own relationship. Close to the end, a bear attacks, a surprising connection between the boys is revealed.
This book not only captures the adventure and thrill of an experience that is not familiar but also the importance of friendship. The setting is rooted in the author’s own experiences of living and traveling along the coastline of southern Alaska and northern British Columbia. The novel won’t disappoint thrill seekers.
While reading this book I was quickly drawn into the plot and connected with the characters. In between the action sequences, there are moments of compassion which delivers an emotional part to the story. This book is written so well that I felt like I was right alongside them. I was terrified, creeped out and hopeful all at the same time.
This story is so much more than just a survival story, this book will make you look at life a little differently, appreciating those around you. Although Chris and Frank were basically forced to work together, we can take this situation and learn from it because in the end they both bonded together and if they had done that from the start, we could imagine that their experience would have been different.
